Research Postgraduate Programs

The Department offers postgraduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science (MSc), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Mechnical Engineering, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering. The programs aim at equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of Hong Kong’s present and future development needs.

The MPhil program focuses on strengthening students’ background in mechanical engineering, increasing their mathematical proficiency, and exposing them to the environment of engineering research and development. The PhD program aims at imbuing students with in-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering and the capability of formulating and conducting independent and original research and development in their chosen specialization.

Applicants for postgraduate programs should have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field. Qualified applicants may be admitted directly to the PhD program. Students must demonstrate a sufficient command of English in addition to having a basic knowledge of mechanical engineering.

Hong Kong’s industry is in transition and the Department is responding by supporting technology transfer and developing new technologies in the areas of manufacturing, energy, transportation, the environment, and health care. Research also contributes to advances in fundamental knowledge, engineering practice, and technology.

Mechanical Engineering research has six major research foci. These areas are listed below:

  • Solid Mechanics and Dynamics
  • Materials Technology
  • Energy Thermal/Fluids and Environmental Engineering
  • Design and Manufacturing Automation
  • Microsystems and Precision Engineering
  • Aerodynamics and Propulsion
